QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON HAJJ AND UMRA LESSON 2 QUESTION 3: When is the hajj obligatory on a person? ANSWER: Hajj is a compulsory duty on any Muslim whom Allah has given the means to do it. Means to do it include: finance, physical health, and safe transportation to and from the holy land. Allah Subhanahu wa taala said: وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا… آل عمران: ٩٧ Meaning: Owed to Allah, by all mankind, is the pilgrimage to the House (Kaaba)- for those able (to reach it)…. [Āl-ʿImrān: 97] QUESTION 4: Is it compulsory for a Muslim as he got the means of going to hajj to go immediately or it is permissible for him to take his time? ANSWER: Yes, it is obligatory upon any one whom Allah has given the means to go to hajj that he should hasten to do so, so long as there is no valid reason to prevent him. Although there are some differences of opinion among the ʿUlamā’ on this issue, the majority of them are of this opinion. Those who uphold this view among the companions of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam include ʿAbdullāh Ibn ʿAbbās and ʿAbdullāh Ibn ʿUmar radhiyallahu anhum. Similarly, Imām Mālik, Imām Ahmad, Imām Abū Hanīfah and Abū Yūsūf are all of this opinion. Although two views, one for and the other against have been reported from Imām Mālik on this point, the most reliable one is the above . The basis for this is what Allah subhanahu wa taala said in the Glorious Qur’ān: وَسَارِعُوا إِلَى مَغْفِرَةٍ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ … آل عمران: ١٣٣ Meaning: Hasten to the forgiveness of your lord… [Āl-ʿImrān: 133] Allah also said: فَاسْتَبِقُوا الْخَيْرَاتِ المائدة: ٤٨ Meaning: And vie with one another in good deeds… [Mā’idah: 48] In a hadīth narrated by ʿAbdullāh Ibn ʿAbbās radhiyallahu anhu from Allah’s Messenger sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, He said: مَنْ أَرَادَ الْحَجَّ فَلْيَتَعَجَّلْ فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ يَمْرَضُ الْمَرِيضُ وَتَضِلُّ الضَّالَّةُ وَتَعْرِضُ الْحَاجَة Meaning: Whoever intends to go for hajj then let him hasten to do so, lest ill-health befell him or something gets lost or a pressing need intervenes. In another narration, ʿAbdullāh Ibn ʿAbbās radhiyallahu anhu said: Allah’s Messenger sallallahu alaihi wa sallama said: تعجلوا إلى الحج يعني الفريضة فإن أحدكم لا يدري ما يعرض له Meaning: Hasten to perform hajj (the obligatory hajj), for one of you does not know what may happen to him . These verses of the Qur’ān and hadīth, which combine both commands and encouragements, are what make it obligatory upon a Muslim to go for hajj as soon as possible. wa sallallahu wa sallama ala Nabiyyina Muhammadin wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajmain.
