QUESTIONS: BARBARA AND GAIL ARE FRIENDS Gail comes in one day to Barbara’s cake shop and the conversation goes this way. “Hey Barbara, I have known you a long time. You know I am gay. Well I am getting married to our friend Rachel. I want you to make that cake that I like but without the berries. Here is an example of the decorations and depictions we want on it. And you get to delivery it at an exact moment of the reception. You know like you did for Jonathan?” Then Barbara says, “Gail I love ya girl, but you know I am Christian. I sell cakes to anyone and do pretty much what they want, but I could never consciously violate what I believe is against God’s order of things. I could not participate in the wedding. So, Gail feels hurt and sues Barbara’s store. She wins and the Court tells Barbara that she must violate her conscience and serve Gail’s wishes. If she does not, she is told, she could be fined daily until she does. The court even advised her that she might want to think of changing her type of business. Gail’s gay friends decide to do this to other businesses to gain what they believe is their rights. 1. What would you do if you were Barbara? 2. Is Barbara being tyrannical? 3.
