Queenslands first cyclone of year predicted to form in Coral Sea this week Monday January 27, 2014 - 18:33 EDT Weather forecasters expect Queenslands first cyclone of the year to form this week. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is closely watching a developing low in the Coral Sea about 980 kilometres east-north-east of Cooktown. It is being fed by a monsoon trough over the north of the country and is expected to track south-west towards Queensland. If it continues to develop, forecasters expect to name it Tropical Cyclone Dillon by Wednesday. The weather bureaus Richard Wardle warns the system may combine with king tides later in the week. We have really good conditions for the low to spin up into a cyclone, he said. People should already have their emergency kits prepared. If they dont, its time to revisit those. We could see quite a significant amount of rain towards the end of the week, not just associated with the tropical cyclone itself but with the strong onshore flow to the south. Tropical cyclones usually bring gale-force winds and heavy rain.
