Quest For Knowledge Mini History Lesson For Today: On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous, “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. The speech was delivered amid the march on Washington, a demonstration demanding an end to racial discrimination and segregation, as well as equal opportunity for African-Americans. With Abraham Lincoln’s towering likeness in the background, King gave a riveting speech to the demonstrators, and just as his prepared text came to an end, he jumped into an improvised speech. He proclaimed to the crowd, Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettoes of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair. He then continued into the most famous part of the speech, I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal. I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today. youtube/watch?v=1UV1fs8lAbg
