Question: ------------ Is it permitted to say Happy New Year? Answer: ----------- The new year (from a Gregorian perspective) is not specific to any religion, and it does not involve any disbelief. Thus we do not see anything wrong with the statement. It is similar to saying have a good day. We must add that if such words take away a Sunnah then they are a bidah. For example if one says Good Day, Jumua Mubarak, Eid Mubarak, or the like before giving salaam, then it is a bidah It is a Sunnah to give salaam before kalaam (i.e. to speak).
