Question about signage. These preferential use signs showed up - TopicsExpress

Question about signage. These preferential use signs showed up recently, alongside an abomination of a bike lane, a too narrow 3.5-4 foot wide bike lane running alongside two 10 foot wide travel lanes going in the same direction. Ive only seen one other occasion when theyve used this type of sign: on a bridge where they placed a white stripe giving 2 feet of asphalt, apparently, to cyclists. Is there a guideline for these signs such that, where theres a substandard width lane, they use the sign that doesnt spell out, in text, that its a bike lane and, instead, one that uses the diamond (preferential use) icon and bicycle icon? If not, why not just use the regular old bike lane sign that spells out, in text, that its a bike lane. [1] IIUC, the diamond is used whenever theres a preferential use lane such as a HOV land or, in the case below, where its a right lane for bicyclists.
