Question of the day: I see posts all the time on facebook expressing why servers should be tipped better. Who do you think should be responsible for a servers income? Choices are: 1) The server. ultimately they are not forced to be in the food industry. If they believe they possess the skills required to earn a higher income, should they either seek a higher paying job or increase the output they provide as a serve? 2) The employer. The owner of a food service business is not forced to pay his waiters/waitress low wages. However, they do recognize that the labor market of individuals qualified for a server job is relatively high. Therefore if an employee quits because their wages are not high enough, the owner has a high probability of being able to find a replacement worker for the same wage. 3) The government. The government could raise wage control laws for the server industry. This would increase the server’s income. However, this will lead to less low skilled workers being able to find jobs in the industry. It will also most likely increase the cost to the consumer. 4) The consumer. Should a minimum gratuity be placed on each receipt no matter the cost? Should tipping be altogether abolished as a practice allowing the employer to increase the cost of food by the average tip and pass the proceeds on as a flat hourly rate to his employees? The mean annual REPORTED wage of a server is $20,880.
