Question of the day: What do you think of this Social Studies - TopicsExpress

Question of the day: What do you think of this Social Studies Assignment for a 5th grader? Write a one-page letter, to be sent to both the Cuban and the U.S. governments, in which you explain why they should encourage American tourism in Cuba. Be sure to explain how both countries can benefit from this cultural exchange and how it will help the Cuban economy (and why that should matter to the United States). Your letter should also include one paragraph using the Panama Canal as an example of how working together can build self-sufficiency. It then goes on to say to include a tourism brochure and what all should be included in it to encourage Americans to take vacations to Cuba. My first thoughts, reactions are: Is this an exercise in hypotheticals since the US government has no formal relations with Cuba? Are we asking 5th graders to make some sort of political statement on an issue that most of them know little about? Is there some political agenda to make them think that the US Government is wrong in their stance on Cuba? Are you trying to tell a 5th grader they should take a political stand for Cuba...? (Which often happens when they read up on or learn a little about something much bigger. Happens with mine anyway...) We have no ambassador with Cuba. We have no embassy there and they have no embassy here. We, also, have a trade embargo with Cuba. (Though it is only one way, apparently...) I dont have a problem with an assignment about Cuba or their history, but an assignment that is meant to make one feel they should visit Communist Nations or feel bad about the economy there just doesnt sit well with me. Especially a 5th grader. If it were high school, I might have a differing opinion... Thoughts?
