Quick update! The last 2 days have been great at the Capitol! Weve had a couple of meetings with the Senate bill sponsor and have also met with 2 of the major insurance companies again to discuss implementation of the infertility option tied to the adoption indemnity benefit. Currently, we are in the Rules Committee in the Senate, which is basically where bills sit before they are assigned to a committee hearing. We have a REALLY REALLY good idea where we will be placed and are hoping to be a priority on their agenda this week! For anyone interested, the committee hearing is awesome to attend where you can hear the major discussion of the bills as well as public testimony for or against it. Ill keep you posted! Once we pass the Senate committee, we will go to the Senate floor for a vote. After we pass that vote (again, prayers please!), the Governor signs it into law! SO... HOW DOES THIS BILL HELP FAMILIES HB 347 is an amendment to an already existing insurance mandate in Utah that says if you have maternity coverage, you are entitled to at least $4000 if you adopt a child. This $4K was to help offset adoption costs. The Utah Infertility Bill allows insurance companies to use that money towards infertility treatments instead of adoption. This wording HAD TO BE added to the bill in order for insurance companies to allow the benefit to be used for infertility treatments. This is not a 1 time benefit- it will reset about every year. So, if in 2015 you wanted to use the funds to adopt but then use the funds in 2016 towards infertility treatments, the bill makes this possible! IF YOU DONT suffer from infertility This bill is important because someone you love DOES suffer. Regarding the last post, written by the amazing Lindsey Redfern, this bill will also not affect the look of my family, but it is important to me because I have walked the lonely and discouraging road of infertility and many people I love are in the thick of the overwhelming journey. I can think of NOTHING more important in my life than my family, and I want to do anything I can to help others get their family. We are hoping you all feel the same!
