Quiet personalities sometimes have amazing lives. We attended a memorial over the weekend of an unassuming, nondescript neighbor. During the eulogy, we learned that he: •Was the lone family survivor of the horrors of Treblinka; •Built a tool-and-die company, amassed a fortune and sold it to pursue philanthropy; •Returned to his birthplace in Poland, where he paid out of his own pocket to rebuild a cemetery desecrated by the Nazis; •Funded a high school scholarship, although he himself never graduated from the fifth grade; •Reconstructed, from memory, a 13-page document depicting his hometown, including landmarks, homes and the number of people living there—the document now resides in the Holocaust Museum in Washington; and •Was buried in his beloved Israel so that he could spend Eternity in the Holy Land. And all this time (for 20 years!), I just thought he was a character in a hat always sitting in the lobby of my building.
