Quite concerning are the posts this year reflecting a certain comedian’s thoughts about Christmas and its origins. It concerns me because too often because a person is a public figure we take whatever he or she says as truth rather than investigating for ourselves. There are many around us who would try to take the joy of Christmas from us. Its time for a short history lesson. When Christmas was originally instituted, December 25th was indeed a pagan festival commemorating the birthday of a false god. While this is historical fact, what is frequently overlooked is that the church’s choice of December 25th was intentional. Instead of Christianizing a pagan festival the church established a rival celebration. While the world has all but forgotten the Greco-Roman gods of antiquity, they are annually reminded that 2000+ years ago Christ invaded time and space. The Complete Bible Answer Book It is true that we don’t know the exact day Jesus was born. What matters is not when Christ was born, but that He was born and that He died. He died for each and every one of us. We can argue all we want about whether to celebrate “Christmas” or not, but it boils down to this. God gave us the greatest gift of all. On this day that we traditionally celebrate Jesus’ birth it is up to us to very simply accept His gift. Greater love has no one than this, that He lay down His life for His friends. John 15:13 Merry CHRISTmas to one and all.
