Barry is a legend and was a genius. He sponsored and successfully implemented many programs to help the old and the young in DC such as, the Free Career Program (government funded) afforded low income individuals to attend specified colleges and upon successful completion of all required courses in your field of study you were guaranteed employment in the government (I am a product of that program), the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) which exposed many students to the work force for the first time and afforded them the opportunity to purchase school supplies and clothes they would have had to do without (my children are recipients of that program), the Energy Assistant Program For Seniors, the District Government paid a large portion of their electric and gas bills (my parents did not have to turn the thermostat down quite so low lol thanks to that program). Thank you Marion S. Barry for sharing with and caring about us, the residents of Washington, DC you were truly a Mayor for the people!!
