Quoting : Halloween Special #4...Lon Chaney Sr., The Man With 1000 Faces There is a very interesting side note below on the soundstage where Phantom Of The Opera was shot, so make sure you see that, but now...to our story! As we have seen, Jack Pierce is credited as being the father of monster movie make up, but actually, it was Lon Chaney Sr. that started it all with The Hunchback Of Notre Dame. Americas first real movie monster was seen in the 1925 silent movie Phantom Of The Opera and on the first revelation of the phantoms face, screams and fainting ensued...just as you would expect. This clip will start at 53:59, at the place where the detail of Chaneys Phantom makeup starts, but earlier on, you can see him as the Hunchback and in other roles in which he created the makeup as well as starred in. Side Note: Only a month ago, the sound stage where Phantom Of The Opera was shot, was torn down. That was Universal Studios Stage 28. In 1924 Universals president, Carl Laemmle, commissioned the construction of a set of the Paris Opera House for the movie. Because it would have to support hundreds of extras, the set became the first to be created with steel girders set in concrete. For this reason it was not dismantled until this year. Stage 28 still contained portions of the opera house set and was the worlds oldest surviving structure built specifically for a movie. It was used in hundreds of movies and TV series. In 2011, the opera house was used by Disney to shoot The Muppets movie. Early this year the Paris Opera House set went through a preservation effort and was placed into storage in preparation for the demolition of Stage 28 on September 23, 2014.
