R.I.P FRANKIE KNUCKLES Absolutely gutted to hear of the death of Frankie Knuckles, a true, TRUE legend. Whenever I hear his name it takes me back to what I think must have been New Years Eve in around 1998 when I was just getting in to House. While my folks were out celebrating the new year, there was a documentary on TV about the rise of clubbing culture in the UK and the part that has always stuck with me was a short interview with Frankie. He was stood behind a table with 2 reel to reel tape recorders showing how back in the day hed make edits by splicing different parts of songs together... the particular song was Eddie Kendricks - Goin Up in Smoke. Hearing this old song, with a thumping drum beat & bass, soaring strings & horns and Eddies emotional falsetto voice just hit me right in the chest Goosebumps! I must have rewound the tape and watched it a dozen times. Hearing that as a 15 year old & imagining the impact it would have it in a dark sweaty 1970s NYC nightclub ignited a love of black dance music that has stayed with me ever since. That love of music has taken me on many amazing nights out & Ive met many wonderful and generous people through it. Without Frankie who knows if any of that would have happened, and without Frankie, there certainly wouldnt be House music as we know it. Thank you Frankie x https://youtube/watch?v=P-kCL-p05eM
