R.I.P. Joe Franklin. If you lived in NYC from 1962 to 1993, you often either accidentally or purposefully happened upon his talk show on WWOR-TV. There was nothing quite like lighting up a joint and watching Joe at work. It was kind of like a combination of old-time television and some sort of absurdist avant-garde take on old-time television. Here is an example. A snippet of an interview with Kim Hunter in which he manages to both fawn over her and insult her in the same sentence. Hype some books you cant quite believe are really books. And then throw it to a young man lip-syncing to Eddie Cantor. The original Cantor helped give Franklin his start in show business when, after Franklin practically stalked him when he was a teenager and Cantor was a big star, ended up buying jokes from the kid for his act until Franklin had so ingratiated himself with him that he ended up producing Cantor at Carnegie Hall.
