R.I.P ZARA Four weeks ago when I was in Bali and this “family” photo was taken and the day was filled with fun and laughter little did we know that we would never see Zara again. Zara is the beautiful black and white dog on the right , sister to Hansel and Shiro and when I received the photo of the 3 of them together just last week with a note to say the crocodile that Hansel had buried had surfaced their parents couldn’t have imagined this to be the last photo of them as a family. I received an email today from Zara’s parents to say that someone in their village had come on to their property and poisoned her. The person who did this unspeakable crime had to walk at least two minutes up the long and winding track to even find her – basically they trespassed to carry out this despicable act. Zara,a rescue dog from BAWA, like the majority of dogs in Bali had a rough start to life but found a wonderful home with Xavier and Soyoko on a large property where she could run and play all day long with her brother and sister. This senseless act of cruelty has devastated her owners as well as all who knew and loved her – an innocent life taken for no apparent reason. Naturally we are now fearing for Hansel & Shiro’s life’s. Our hearts are heavy today and many tears have flowed. So many people see the Balinese as Spiritual and according to their religion they are suppose to abide by the concept of Ahimsa “do no harm to any living thing” but many animals suffer at the hands of those who take delight in performing acts of cruelty and death – so much for religion. Laws with suitable punishments are needed to stop this happening, then perhaps they won’t be so quick to maim and murder animals. Rest In Peace beautiful Zara, your life may have been short but you were loved by many, it was an honour to know you.
