RADAR WEEKLY REPORT: It’s been a busy week down at Radar HQ @Hackney Downs Studios. Here’s a quick update on a week of training, local views and breaking news. Exciting new projects launching: 1) Our Editorial Lead - Paul - is currently training 55 new citizen reporters in the Niger Delta. So far, the trainees have all responded fantastically well and we’re delighted to be opening up new Networks in the area. 2) We’ve also been busy preparing for a new project in Kenya, which launches this coming Monday. Our Digital Lead - Corin - will be travelling to Nairobi on Sunday, and then on to Marsabit, to train 80 men and women in mobile reporting and SMS governance. Over the course of the next 4 weeks, Corin will highlight the important role our reporters have in highlighting gender inequalities, issues of civic governance and minority rights (among other vital issues) in their local communities. Radar reporters make headlines this week: Continuing Radar’s work with our network of dedicated reporters in Sierra Leone, our reporters have reported on a variety of issues as Ebola continues to devastate their local communities. All of their reports can be found here: ebola.onourradar.org/ 1) On Tuesday, Freetowns Amjata Bayoh worked with the BBC’s World Service, interviewing a 17 year old school girl called Haja. Haja discussed the affect Ebola has had on her schooling. For Haja, educational radio broadcasts are no substitute for the classroom, and she worries that young women will see marriage and pregnancy as the next viable option. You can catch up on the interview here: https://soundcloud/onourradar/bbc-outside-source-ebolas-impact-on-education?utm_source=soundcloud&utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=twitter 2) On Wednesday, Mariama Jalloh spoke to Radar about the recent death of her father. In a moving interview, Mariama discussed how her father’s death had affected her family and why his final resting place prevents her from grieving: https://youtube/watch?v=RxqidJumivc&feature=youtu.be 3) Additionally, we’ve been working with SKY News on an interactive audio feature in which our Sierra Leonean reporters will be explaining who they are, how Ebola has affected them and why they want to report about it.You can view the interactive feature below: interactive.news.sky/2014/html5/TimelineTemplate/index.html?project=Ebola_Voices_Timeline_desktop Finally, heres a message to all of our reporters: We’re extremely proud of our current reporters, both at home and abroad, as they continue to inform the international community of the problems in their local communities. Keep up the great work! Coming up next week - Don’t miss: Modern Day Slavery: The fantastic Charlotte Latimer will be helping Radar launch a project which focuses on modern day issues of slavery.
