RADIO SHOW WAS AIMED AT FEMALES WOMEN SHOULDNT LISTEN KEXs sarcastic Women Shouldnt Listen program debuted weekday mornings at 9:15am, beginning on February 9, 1948. The 15 minute show began as a contest about contests. Talent on the show to inspire contestants was hosted by Jesse Leonard (later KEX PM & ND) with George Bruns, bass violinist, vibraharp & KEX orch. leader (later co-wrote Ballad of Davy Crockett & Zorro); Fred McKinney, pianist (later with KOIN Klock); George Baker, guitarist (formerly with KEXs Grandpappy & His Pals) & Dick Reed, vocalist. No women were on the show. Women Shouldnt Listen did not require box tops, labels or facsimiles. Listeners wanting to be contestants to win Kaiser Fleetwings deluxe electric dishwashers (1st & 2nd prizes), were asked to complete this sentence in 25 additional words or less: I like radio contests because______________. This question was asked because half of all Portland radio shows were running contests. On February 12, 1948 it was revealed from Henry J. Kaisers men that the Kaiser Fleetwings deluxe electric dishwashers being given away had no electric connections. They ran on water power (hydraulic) supplied by your faucet. When the Kaiser dishwashers were introduced in November 1947 they were selling for $229.50. By January 1948 the price had dropped to $139.50 and by October 1948 just $69.50. One of the winners was Helen Darden, of 1531 N.E. 63rd Ave. Her entry: I Like radio contests because contesting removes the not from monotony and changes it to money. Judges were Del Milne (formerly on KGW, with KEX), Jack Matlack (J.J. Parker Theaters, Exe.) & Roy Vernstrom (later PP&L Asst. GM). A third of the entries were believed to be from professional or habitual contestants. Last broadcast of Women Shouldnt Listen was on June 11, 1948. References: The Oregonian.
