RAINFALL RECAP It has been one of the productive weeks of the year in terms of widespread rainfall across large areas of eastern/south eastern and northern/central Australia this week and quantity of rainfall. Thanks to a stalling slow moving weather pattern with a trough sitting over eastern Australia most of the week and lagging back into the Northern Territory. Most of the Murray Darling basin (map one) has seen some good falls this week, central/eastern NSW and eastern Victoria have done very well with widespread 50 to 100mm falls and as high as 200-300mm on parts of the south coast of NSW. 50mm has greeted the harbour city this week with higher falls in some of the western suburbs while Canberra received 70mm for the week! Most of Queensland (map two) has also seen some good totals this week thanks to the same stalling trough with plenty of moisture injected into the trough from the north east, a few areas have missed out but in general most of the state has seen 25 to 50mm the past week with even higher falls in parts of the southern inland and 100mm+ falls over the central highlands and Coalfields. In some parts of Queensland it has been the best week for rainfall since 2012 which shows how poor rainfall has been the past two years. Northern Territory (map three) has also seen some excellent falls this week as the wet season really started to crank up with good rainfall extending well south into the Alice Springs region. Many areas saw between 50 to 100mm. Even Tasmania (map four) saw a reasonably wet week especially about the central plateau and parts of the upper east coast seeing between 50 to 100mm. Most of WA saw a dry week which breaks the trend of most of Western Australia seeing above average rainfall through the Spring. The good news (or bad) is further showers and storms will continue across parts of NSW and Qld this week contracting more into Qld by mid week ahead of a new system which may bring further widespread rain and thunderstorms across large parts of NSW and southern Qld once more towards the end of the week with some signs of an ECL forming off the NSW coast. Stay turned for more information. All rainfall maps are provided by the BOM. - JWC
