The rally will take place will take place at 6pm on 17th Street and 16th Avenue, near where she was slain. “No arrests have been made,” asserted an angry Keesha Eure, the NAVC’s chair. “We are fed up!” nbcnewyork/news/local/Vigil-Cheyenne-Bond-Teen-Girl-Cheerleader-Shot-Killed-Newark-Witness-Photo-265477051.html The rally will also mark the NAVC’s fifth anniversary! The Newark AntiViolence Coalition was launched in the Summer of 2009 to protest the deadly epidemic of gun violence and to also protest both governmental and community indifference to this dangerous and pressing issue. Conceptualized and initiated by then Councilman Ras Baraka, it began with the senseless slaying Nakeisha Allen in broad daylight on July 20th 2009! On July 23, 2009, Baraka, recently inaugurated as Newark’s 40th mayor, would led a protest that shutdown the intersection of Elizabeth and Meeker Avenues. That tactic would become the NAVC’s calling card. They would go on sustained protests that continued for a historic 155 straight weeks! The NAVC is credited with being a critical reason why former police chief Garry McCarthy left the city for a similar post in Chicago. The NAVC’s direct action strategy has inspired similar protests and formations in other cities similarly plagued with gun violence like the Trenton AntiViolence Coalition in the state’s capital. For more information about the NAVC, please call us at (908) 605-NAVC or email us at navc@googlegroups...
