RAMADAN REMINDERS: Ramadan 07: The Islamic Home Ramadan 07: The Islamic Home The Islamic home is one that is founded on God-consciousness or taqwa. It is a home built on solid foundations, in which people fear Allah, obey Him and perform good deeds. Allah, all praises and glory be to Him, asks us: “Is it then he who laid the foundation of his building on piety to Allah and His Good Pleasure better, or he who laid the foundation of his building on the brink of an undetermined precipice ready to crumble down, so that it crumbled to pieces with him into the fire of Hell? And Allah guides not the people who are zalimun (cruel, violent, proud, polytheist and wrongdoer).” (Surah At-Taubah:109) Our homes are a trust and responsibility. Allah, all praises and glory be to him, advises us: “O you who believe! Ward off yourselves and your families against a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones, over which are (appointed) angels stern and severe, who disobey not, (from executing) the Commands they receive from Allah, but do that which they are commanded.” (Surah At-Tahrim:6) We must ensure that those under our care are obeying Allah. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, advised us that we are shepherds and our families are our flocks, and we are responsible for those under our care. This responsibility entails ordering family members to pray. Allah, the Sublime informs us of the Prophet Ismail, peace be upon him: “And he used to enjoin on his family and his people As-Salat (the prayers) and the Zakat, and his Lord was pleased with him” (Surah Maryam:55) The pillars of Muslim home are an upright believing mother and father who undertake the upbringing of their offspring. One of the greatest trusts is that of improving the Islamic home. The Islamic home passes Ramadan in remembrance, recitation, humility and fear of Allah. It is filled with the traditions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in food, drink, eating and sleeping. The Islamic home observes the ethics of separation and covering. It worships Allah through this means and considers it a source of honour and dignity for the Muslim woman. Many are the homes that have been tested with wealth. It has corrupted the hearts of its members and ruined their futures. When wealth entered some homes, remembrance, inner peace, shame and dignity left. Similarly, when music enters the home it undermines values, derides principles and exhausts minds. The Islamic home rises and sleeps with remembrance of Allah, far from vain and idle talk. The Qur’an describes these people as: “Those who turn away from Al-Laghw (dirty, vain, falsehood and all that Allah has forbidden)” (Surah Al-Mu’minun) The Islamic home has a sense of shame before Allah. True modesty and shame is to control one’s mind and its consciousness, one’s limbs, tongue and private parts, and to protect one’s stomach and that which it collects. A feature of the Islamic home is the establishment of the five daily prayers at their appointed times, with bowing and prostration in humility. It also features recitation of the Qur’an during the night and in the extremes of the day, and remembrance of Allah at daybreak and dusk. It revives the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessing of Allah be upon him, and avoids vain talk. For these people a great reward is promised. Allah the Almighty says: “Verily, those who say: ‘Our Lord is Allah (Alone)’, and then they stand firm, on them the angels will descend (at the time of their death) (saying): ‘Fear not, nor grieve! But receive the glad tidings of Paradise which you have been promised!” (Surah Fussilat:30) Surely the month of Ramadan bestows on the Islamic home spirituality and satisfaction. It awakens its members to stand at night in prayer, beckons them to fast during the day, and calls them to remember Allah, all praises and glory be to Him.
