RAW is going to commercial, so time to wax contemplative about my iWPS experience. First of all, I love seeing my poetry heads. To get to talk nerd shop with William Evans and Hanif Willis-Abdurraqib and then hear them both crush it on the finals stage (I had the luck to be at all of Wills rounds, and to hear someone perform what I consider a suite across the course of all three times he hit the stage was hella inspiring). Everyone on the Finals Stage brought their A game and then some. I dont mean anything controversial when I say I noticed a lot of writers flexing during this tournament. Trying new things. Learning from the young bucks. Supportive. Eager to dialogue. Danez Smith-Smith needs to have a slew of one-man shows. My own experience was insanely smooth thanks to Karen Garrabrant and Seth White and their collective grace under pressure. And even the infamous ECP incident kind of had a John Hughes ending. And who doesnt love a John Hughes ending. I swear I heard If You Leave as we rolled our bags away from the hotel. It was probably the lobby music. And to come home to an edit of my friend Lara Kaapunis poems was a wonderful gift. Its probably the sheer exhaustion, but I do believe I might be gettting a bit emotional. Thank you, poets. All of you.
