RCPsych: Update from our Public Affairs Manager 2014 Political Party Conferences: Are the parties finally moving from ‘good words to good deeds’ on mental health? With less than a year to go before the 2015 General Election, this year’s party conference season was always going to be an exciting one- a chance for the three main parties to convince voters of their readiness to Govern the country. And for the College, a chance to see whether the three main parties’ warm words around mental health will finally translate to real action in 2015- meeting with key Government Ministers and MPs including Jeremy Hunt, Norman Lamb, Paul Burstow, Luciana Berger and Sarah Wollaston. First up was Labour conference. While the country was still reeling from the Scottish referendum, it was in fact the NHS that dominated the conference. Indeed, by far the most well-received speech from the party’s front bench came from Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham, who’s impassioned speech on the NHS and his vision for ‘whole person care’, promising that mental health in the NHS would “no longer the poor relation on the fringes of the system but making parity a reality”, earned him two standing ovations. rcpsych.ac.uk/policyandparliamentary/parliamentandpublicaffairs/partyconferences.aspx
