RE-DEDICATION SET FOR SUNDAY AT ST. BONAVENTURE CATHOLIC CHURCH RAEVILLE — Sunday, February 2, will be a day of recognition and celebration for parishoners at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. Archbishop George J. Lucas will be in Raeville for the 8 a.m. Mass where he will re-dedicate the church. Indeed, parishoners have something to celebrate and be proud of, having completed a restoration project which cost nearly $65,000, yet incurring no debt for the church. Church trustee Fred Fangman told The Elgin Review last week the restoration project began in May 2013 and was completed in November by McGill Painting out of Missouri Valley, Iowa, owned by Roger & Libby Reily. During that time, work was done to bring back the original color of gray-beige to the church’s walls and improve the antique white and gold trim on the communion rail. That’s just for starters. Other work done included: • Touch up the Stations of the Cross • Moving the Pieta statue kept in the cry room to a new location between the 13th and 14th Stations of the Cross • Place storm glass outside of the stained glass windows • Refinish woodwork in the choir loft “They redone the stencil work to make it resemble what it was like when the church was first built,” he said Thursday. The church was originally completed in 1919 and is now included on the National Register of Historic Places, and a state historical sight. Donations from parishoners and others helped cover the costs of the improvements. The church benefitted from a large donation made by Clarence Werner who grew up in Raeville many years ago. Werner donated $50,000 towards the project. “He’s (Werner) to be commended for it,” Fangman said.
