RE: Zambian woman arrested in Ethiopia-UPDATE The Lusaka Agreement Task Force in Kenya with the help of the Ethiopia Wildlife Conservation Authority have informed ZAWA Esther Namakuba Muyangana, who was arrested for possessing ivory bangles has been released. Upon arrest, she was held at the Federal Police Commission Crime Investigation Center and appeared in the Arada Division Court in Addis Ababa. All the three bracelets were on her wrist such that it was a challenge for the police to remove them. They had to take her to a Jewellery shop to have them removed by cutting the ivory bracelets. The case was heard in court on January, 3 2014 where she was fined. She was released after paying a fine of 5000 Ethiopian birr (USD 263). The authorities in Ethiopia have confirmed that she travelled to Zambia after being released. ZAWA is saddened by the experience and re-emphasising the need for Zambians to take possession of ivory matters seriously to avoid such experiences. Countries have become strict in enforcing the law again Ivory trade because of the rise in Elephant and Rhino poaching across the continent.
