REALLY interesting clip on the wages paid to domestic workers. I feel VERY strongly about this issue as the domestic worker that raised me and my siblings was/IS like a second mother to us. I am really saddened when I think about how she neglected her own children (out of occupational necessity) to raise us. The issue of wages for domestic workers is really a blight on the moral conscience of South Africa. We could really RADICALLY transform the lives of the poorest of the poor, the working poor, by simply paying a reasonable living wage to domestic workers. With the RISING cost of petrol, taxi-fare, food...domestic workers are in a heck of a situation. SARS should make your payments to your domestic worker tax-deductible (like any employer who pays wages is able to claim) and then the minimum wage should be raised...significantly. Do this thought experiment...visualise yourself as a domestic worker...and think about whether or not you would be able to survive on that income? Slavery ended in the 1800s, but we have a very sinister and diabolical form of slavery taking place right under our noses . Domestic workers are people too...they have kids, families, lives, hopes and dreams...give them the respect, humanity and dignity they need and I am POSITIVE that South Africa will experience a fundamental change for the better as these pillars of our society will be empowered to do and be more. mg.co.za/multimedia/2014-07-24-minimum-wage-a-domestic-struggle
