REALLY long nerd post/health moment: get to KNOW YOUR BODY. I struggle with an inability to process sodium properly (great for someone who loves hot yoga, distance running, and being sweaty in general), so we literally add no salt to our food because of my wacky blood pressure. I cut out processed food completely on Monday - and the few things I do eat that come in a package are all low or no sodium. Between a few spin classes, hot yoga, and a four miler with Jack, I woke up this morning dizzy, weak and fatigued, cramping, and having not really slept for the last two nights. Even though this happened after my first marathon, the light bulb didnt go on till a few minutes ago that THIS WAS NOT NORMAL for me, no matter how hard I work out. I calculated my sodium intake and Im well less than 750mg per day since Monday, with a good hour or two of intense sweating per day (and a ton of water to rehydrate). A diet high in sodium can kill you over time, but having too much water in your system or not enough sodium (or both) can do it faster. Hyponatremia, my other nemesis. Bottom line: we tell ourselves to push past the pain, and most days, thats a great way to stay motivated and keep working. But if it doesnt feel right, find someone who can help you get answers. I dont slow down, and if I kept up with the very little salt, tons of water, lots of sweating routine, wed have spent a little time in the ER pretty soon. Stay SAFE and HEALTHY friends!
