RECRUITING BLUES EPISODE Three How to confirm that candidate - TopicsExpress

RECRUITING BLUES EPISODE Three How to confirm that candidate is really Sikh ? This became a real problem. In my area if responsibility, number of Sikh families had settled down on migration from Pakistan And Punjab during partition. As the number of vacancies allotted use to be as per the population census, we use to get vacancies for Sikh, Punjab and Sikh LI paltans. Though number of vacancies for other cast candidates use to be large, but ratio was number of vacancies and participating candidates use to give better perspective chances in these casts. The candidates wanted to get into army by any means so chances of some non Sikh non Punjabi or non Sikh LI was always there. For Sikh LI there was a caste certificate issued by the Tehsildar or equivalent, there is no way to check others. Since almost all the candidates had cut hair and not tyeing a turban even being Sikh myself , one found it difficult to identify. We had to rely on our own devised methods. Some of the ways adopted were :- 1. Confirm the name are of Sikh type ie ending with Singh. But names of Garwali Rajpoots and UP are also ending with Singhs. 2. Confirm parents names. That time name of mother was not written on certificates. 3. Is he wearing a Karra. 4. Does he have knowledge of Sikh religion. Can he give names of Sikh gurus or can he recite Japuji sahib. Once it had put up my difficulty to the Deputy Director Zone ( a Brig ) who was a Sikh himself. He gave a very unique suggestion. The suggestion was to ask the candidate to give few choicest punjabi abuses like Teri Maa Di ......... Etc. amused but it worked in most of the cases as confirmatory measure. Suggestion with experience.
