REFORM IN ISLAM This is a topic that has been coming up regularly in quite a few articles and discussions. This post is not about whether or not Islam needs reform - almost all of the non-Muslim world and a significant proportion of the Muslim world seem to agree that it does, especially the aspects that give rise to violence and terrorism. This debate is how to bring about that reform. I believe that in any society, change needs to come from within, and that the western world has been trying to force this change from the outside. The west has been acting like a parent telling a child that they know what is best for them. Which is, forst of all, extremely patronizing. More importantly, until the child actually realizes the need to change himself, he will only respond with resentment and rebellion. The history of forced change is an ugly one, and a failure ridden one. On the other hand, societies that have evolved by themselves have gone on to being stable and prosperous. To everyone who wants to see Islam change, by all means persuade, but without offence. Speak the language they understand. Help them in non-aggravating ways. But dont force change, it will keep blowing up in your face, and even set back the process a few decades. I would love to hear thoughts/counter-opinions on this.
