REGENT Going from Strength to Strength | Importance and Performance of Sugarcane in Pakistan FROM ONE REGENT ONTO ANOTHER Yes you may all have heard by now that we plan to shift from one Regent [the 5% SC Liquid Formulation] to the new and improved Regent [the 800 WG]. So what has changed and why have we decided to change the formulation. Besides the fact that the WG is now the globally supported and future formulation of Regent at Bayer there are a number of positives that have compelled us to look towards the new formulation with much enthusiasm. Let’s start with just what Regent is and then move onto its key benefits. What is Regent Regent is an innovative molecule by Bayer Crop Science famous for its strong plant growth effects besides excellent insecticidal properties. Regent is recognized by Sugarcane and Rice growers world over as the No.1 brand. Why Regent WG a. Strong PG Effect Regent has outstanding PG [Plant Growth] effect in Sugarcane. This means boosting plant growth and vigour, improving plant greening, boosting weight and eventually yields. b. Pests Besides exceptional PG properties Regent effectively controls borers in Sugarcane, including Root, Stem and Top borers. Besides borers, Regent is the best termite control product available, effectively killing entire termite families c. Ease of Use [ of using a dry formulation ] and user safety Due to the nature of its new and improved dry formulation [the 800 WG] Regent minimizes user exposure with chemicals and eliminates the need to rinse empty canisters. The new formulation makes it easy to mix the product in water for application. d. Registered product in Sugarcane While the previous liquid formulation was only registered in Rice, this new formulation is registered in Sugarcane, which provides farmers the flexibility of an alternate Mode of Action against pests besides the usual granular products. e. Pest Control and Bumper Yield benefits With a novel Mode of Action and exceptional PG effect with pest control Regent is the ideal product for Sugarcane growers who aspire to be the best. Acceptability of the New Formulation With the introduction of a new formulation there is high chance of some apprehension about the dose rates, application techniques, and its acceptability in the market place. Realizing this apprehension we asked farmers [through independent Focus Groups] about how they feel about the new formulation versus the existing formulation from current users of Regent. Surprisingly Sugarcane farmers had a very positive view [90% of farmers picked the new Concept as an acceptable solution] about this change, but wanted to make sure that the efficacy of the product was the same as that of the 5% SC. All they need are demonstrations of the new product and they are willing to believe and recommend Regent as the best product for Sugarcane. DOSE RATE | PACK SIZE | APPLICATION TECHNIQUES The registered use rate of Regent 800 WG in Sugarcane is 30gm/acre for use against Sugarcane Termite and Borers. The product will be available in a 30gm sachet pack [meaning an acre pack will be available] and is the only available pack for this product. The same dose rate is registered in Rice and Maize and thus the same sachet can be used in any of the 3 registered crops without any dose rate adjustments. As with the old formulation of Regent the new formulation can also be used in much the same way and spread by the 3 different techniques listed below. For urea-based application, please pay special attention to the water volume mentioned, which has been tested before making this recommendation. 1. Set Application Regent can be easily applied on Sets [new cane]. Best results are expected when Regent [diluted in water] is sprayed over exposed sets before earthing up. Picture on the right show knapsack spraying of Regent over exposed sets. 2. Urea dispersal method A simple method whereby farmers can mix 30 grams of Regent [1 sachet] with 250ml of water. After mixing the product with water pour this mixture over 10kg of urea. Mix thoroughly [always wearing protective gloves]. Once mixed, disperse the urea over the Sugarcane field. [For best results apply urea to field in watter condition] 3. Flooding [Recommended Method] Certainly the easiest of the 3 methods, whereby you can simply pour the dry content of a Regent sachet [30gms] into a drum and mix. Place the drum with Regent solution at the water inlet to your field and let the product flow out slowly making sure that the entire Regent is equally distributed in your field.
