REMARKS BY THE JAPANESE VICE-MINISTER FOR INTERNAL AFFAIRS AND COMMUNICATION, THE HONOURABLE KEIICHIRO TACHIBANA, AT THE LAUNCH OF DIGITAL TERRESTRIAL TELEVISION IN BOTSWANA On behalf of the government of Japan, I would like to offer my heartiest congratulations to the highly revered Vice President Dr. Kedikilwe, Minister Masisi, Minister Molefi, and the rest of those here for today’s initiation ceremony of digital TV. Africa’s first digital TV in ISDB-T will start here in Botswana today. I wish to express my heartfelt thanks and respect to all government officials of the republic of Botswana who made enormous efforts in deciding to adopt ISDB-T and commence digital TV. I believe that the introduction of this broadcasting system, which is both technologically and socially superior, will certainly contribute to the development of Botswana. Japan will implement assistance including human resource development and technology transfer, to Botswana in deploying digital TV. In accordance with the mutual agreement we have both committed to, the Joint Task Force for cooperation in digital broadcasting will be held from tomorrow. Japan completed the transition to digital TV in 2011, and with Japan’s cooperation, preparations for the transition to digital TV have been in steady progress in many countries in Central and South America. We would like to cooperate with Botswana as well. Japan’s cooperation with Botswana in the field of broadcasting is not limited to inter-government cooperation. For some time now, NHK, the public broadcasting corporation of Japan, has been cooperating in the launching of educational TV. NHK will soon start cooperating in the provision of TV programmes. The attendees from Japan at today’s ceremony include representatives of Japanese industry. We sincerely hope that digital TV will further strengthen the public-private relationship between Botswana and Japan. I would like to make today’s ceremony an opportunity for other countries in southern Africa to adopt ISDB-T and prompt a smooth transition of the introduction of digital TV. Japan will continue encouraging other SADC member countries to adopt ISDB-T gaining the cooperation of the Botswana Government. In conclusion, I would like to say that there is no doubt that our television broadcasting activities have stimulated future economic and cultural exchanges between us, while also further deepening our bilateral relationship. I sincerely hope that the reinforced relations between Botswana and Japan will result in further development of both countries. Thank you, Botswana!
