****** REMEMBER WHEN THERE WAS A REHOBOTH AIRPORT? ****** This photo taken 1975 - Rehoboth Airport was located on Airport Road that connected Coastal Highway (Route 1) and Old Orchard Road. The flight control tower and hangars were on Airport Road. The map pictured shows the runways and airport facilities and their positions relative to the roadways and illustrates how the airfield was laid out. The airport served as a stopover for privately owned single engine aircraft. Only seldom might you see a twin engine plane land at the airport. The airport was also used by crop dusters. These old bi-winged type planes would spray many of the nearby crop fields or spray DDT over wetlands as a means of mosquito control. There were plenty of mosquitos around here in those days. On take offs and landings, these planes would sometimes fly SO LOW over Old Landing Road that, while driving along in your car, you could almost reach up and touch the landing gear as the pane passed overhead. Two of the 4 runways ended only a matter of feet from the side of Old Orchard Road. It was a thrilling experience, albeit, somewhat un-nerving.
