REMEMBER, no one is making you read this, so if you dont care for this debate, move along and go troll somewhere people give a sh**. Im a writer, this is what I do. So #Titletown, and some of you fans, want to say Im an idiot over the Bears-Packers rivalry debate, but give no informative reasoning as to why its such a great rivalry, other than because it is. So I put together a mini-essay discussing why its an overrated rivalry. If you dont want to read it all, fine, but dont waste your time commenting something stupid and ignorant. I really want this to be a true football debate. So as we all know, this Packers-Bears rivalry debate has been heated, and gotten a lot of responses the last few days, so let me expand on my position: its an overrated rivalry. 1941 and 2010 are the only TWO times the teams have met in the post season in their 80 year history, and they have only made it to the playoffs the same year only 4 times (including the 2 mentioned meetings). When these teams play, its usually a meaningless game for one, if not both, teams. In the 70s, the Bears sucked, and the Packers werent so great themselves. In the 80s, the Bears were dominant and constantly dismantled the Packers (see 1980, Bears win 61-7). In the 90s, it was the other way around; the Bears sucked and the Packers constantly owned the Bears (the Packers won 14 of 20 meetings in the 90s including 11 in a row). This trend continued through the early 00s as the Packers won 9 out of 10 until 2005. Then the Bears became a good team, and the Packers transitioned to the Aaron Rodgers era and the Bears won the next 5 out of 6. Since Aaron Rodgers has been the starter in Green Bay, the Packers are 10-3 vs the Bears. This rivalry is always lopsided one way and since 1993 the Packers are 30-11 vs. the Bears. I hesitate to call it a truly great rivalry when the Packers have absolutely owned the Bears for over 20 years. I will grant Packers and Bears fans this; the rivalry has picked up over the last few years. The NFC Championship game, and week 17 of this last season. But other than that, his rivalry has offered very little throughout NFL history. This rivalry has NO memorable/historic games, and it has been fairly meaningless. Packers and Bears fans are quick to point to the Lombardi and Halas coaching rivalry... But the Lombardi and Landry rivalry was bigger!! Lombardi and Landry always met with the NFL Championship on the line, and they have a memorable moment: The Ice Bowl. The best rivalries are when football is played at its highest level, and the teams involved leave it all on the field. Can we say that about the Bears and Packers? No. Jay Cutler left the NFC Championship with a sprained knee. Im sorry, it may hurt, but if the Packers are such a big rival, and a Super Bowl appearance is on the line, you play. Philip Rivers played in the AFC Championship on a torn ACL, Cutler shouldve gotten his ass on the field. I cant say the Bears and Packers leave it all on the field, every time. Can I say that about the Steelers and Raiders rivalry of the 70s? Yes. No one ever left the field in those games, and both teams spit on, punched, and fought eachother after every play. They didnt just try to win, they tried to kill eachother. The 49ers and Cowboys of the 90s is another great example: 2 dynasties, 2 of the NFLs greatest teams EVER, playing for the Super Bowl for 3 years straight. Football didnt get better than that. Yet majority of the Bears-Packers rivalry has had nothing more than 2nd place in the division at stake. Yes, both those rivalries were brief, but the only reason the Packers and Bears have had such longevity is that they are division foes. Should we consider the Titans and Jaguars a great rivalry? After all, their games are about as meaningful as most Packers-Bears games. Hell, overall, the Jets and Dolphins rivalry has been a more exciting rivalry. The fake spike game, the Monday Night Miracle in 2000, and the Tsunami AFC Championship of 1982. The only people caring about the Packers and Bears rivalry is Packers and Bears fans. Are you tuning in to that game? If its prime time, sure, but other than that, you probably arent watching... However, are you tuning into the Brady-Manning game? God damn right you are, and so is the rest of America. As of today, are you gonna miss the 49ers-Seahawks game? Hell no. Thats because those 2 rivalries offer football at its highest level. Something the Bears and Packers rarely offer. Just because this rivalry is the oldest, doesnt mean its the greatest, and I hope you NFL fans realize that. I respect the history of these 2 franchises, but the rivalry as a whole truly fails the test of greatness. #1yardshort
