REMEMBRANCE – FREEDOM FIGHTERS - AFRICAN CARIB is the name given here to another St Kitts Warrior. Commonly known as Indian Warner and/or Thomas Warner, African Carib was born in St Kitts on or about 1630. As a child growing up in Capesterre/Basseterre African Carib’s mother told him many tales of his extended family in her homeland of Dominica. He maintained close connections with his family & community. Living during the 1639 uprisings in St Kitts, he was interested in issues of liberation and freedom for his people. At the age of 15 years in 1645 finding the racist ways of life in St Kitts impossible, and facing many issues of prejudice and discrimination he become vocal about the injustices meted out against him and his people. Despised by many because of his mixed parentage, the Enslavers sought ways of ending his life. His mother arranged for him to flee St Kitts for Dominica. In Dominica he, with many other Ankhcestors, formed an army of freedom fighters who led many victorious military expeditions against England and France. In 1664, at the age of 34 years, he was appointed Governor of Dominica. Therefore, Dominica, lead by this Kittian souljah, was the first island to be declared an independent state long before the Haiti revolutionaries. African Carib continued his souljahship, between 1664 and 1666 turned his military intelligence against France and fought many liberation expeditions on the French controlled islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. African Carib was captured in Guadeloupe, detained and released after mediating a peace settlement between the Carib nations of Dominica & St Vincent and the British & French on the 25 December 1667. Regaining his position as Governor of Dominica he continued his expeditions against the English on many of the other islands such as Antigua. The Governor of Antigua was African Caribs half-brother, by a different mother. In 1675 after a long battle for Antigua African Carib was killed, some say murdered, by his half-brother. Apparently African Carib was duped, taken in by the affection shown to him by his white half-brother. African Carib and some of his soldiers attended a ‘party’ his brother held to unite the two brothers together but it was a wicked trap and they were over-powered and murdered.
