REMINDER TO PET PARENTS: ITS FLEA SEASON (YES, AGAIN) As the weather gets colder, its not just earwigs and those teenagers you forgot you had that are trying to get in and spend more time in your home. Fleas are desperate to attach to anything that might get them away from the inevitable frost and into a warm place with a lot of blood to suck, and heres some fun facts that I wish you all already knew so I didnt have to keep telling everyone: YOUR PET DOES NOT NEED TO BE AROUND OTHER ANIMALS TO CATCH FLEAS. Fleas can live in grass outside your home and feed off of rodents or passing animals, and the larvae and juveniles can live not-on-a-critter for a decent amount of time before attaching to Fluffy. YOUR PET DOES NOT NEED TO EVER (LIKE LITERALLY EVER) GO OUTSIDE TO GET FLEAS. If you, or anyone in your home, does any of the following: - Walk through tall grass - Walk through short grass - Walk around grass - Pet a dog or cat who has fleas - Visit the home of someone whose pet has fleas - Hang out with a friend who has done any of the above Then you can unwittingly bring a flea or two into your home. The likelihood of picking up hitchhikers from any of these activities is a bit low, but thats still not impossible, so seriously please understand that there are no evil commie dogs bringing fleas into your home without you noticing. FLEA BATHS DO NOT CURE A FLEA PROBLEM. A flea bath will (ideally and most of the time) kill all of the fleas on your pet at that time, and can help repel fleas for, in scientific terms, maybe, like, a day?. The BEST thing you can do for your pet is get it a treatment from the vet, most typically in the form of drops for the back of its neck, that will repel and kill fleas for up to a month at a time, and if you get the good stuff (I highly and personally recommend Revolution Brand) will kill the rest of the fleas and the larvae in your home, because... FLEAS LIVE IN YOUR HOUSE, NOT JUST ON YOUR PET. Fleas like to hang out in pretty stable locations where they can get a decent meal on a relatively regular schedule, so they absolutely looooove when a pet is an indoor pet that hangs out on carpet, blankets, couches, chairs and beds. The fleas get a warm place to stay where they arent being constantly scratched or bathed off, and delicious food is delivered to them regularly by walking nearby, sitting down, or trying to go to sleep before work tomorrow. When you get that call from a groomer that says PuPu brought some friends with him to the spa today, that means a few things: 1 - Your pet is getting a flea bath. I can name exactly zero groomers who would find fleas on any pet in their shop who would not IMMEDIATELY stop what they are doing to flea bath your pet and spray down and sanitize everything your pet touched on the way in. 2 - You need to get yourself a flea treatment like those little drops I mentioned earlier, to put on Sir FrumpleBum as soon as you get them home. 3 - You should probably vacuum your carpets and wash your sheets and any blankets your pet likes to crash on. You can buy flea sprays for furniture and such, but with a good, high quality treatment that should be pretty much unnecessary except to remove corpses. WELCOME TO FALL, I HOPE YOU ALL LEARNED SOMETHING.
