REMINDER: The Mid-America Regional Council will be conducting a household hazardous waste collection (HHW) event from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, August 9, at the Belton Freshman Center, located at 801 W. North Avenue. This collection is free to residents of participating cities in the MARC Solid Waste Management District, including Raymore, Belton and unincorporated Cass County, but is limited to a predetermined number of cars so early arrival is advised to avoid missing the cutoff. Anyone utilizing this or any other MARC-sponsored HHW collection event should be prepared to show proof of residency. Since this event has been designated as an “ABOP” collection, only antifreeze, batteries, motor oil and paint will be accepted for disposal, and business waste will not be accepted. For maximum safety, HHW collection participants are asked to make sure that all lids are tightly closed and containers are not leaking. Additionally, HHW products should ideally be kept in their original containers, if possible, and should never be mixed. HHW – essentially leftover household products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable or reactive agents – may include products such as paints, cleaners, oils, antifreeze, batteries and pesticides potentially contain hazardous ingredients and require special care for proper disposal. Improper disposal of HHW can include pouring them down the drain, on the ground, into storm sewers or, in some cases, putting them out with the trash. These improper disposal methods can pollute the environment and pose health threats, including potential physical injury to sanitation workers, and contamination of septic tanks or wastewater treatment. If left around the house, HHW is a potential hazard to children and pets. For more information, visit recyclespot.org online or call 816-701-8226.
