REPLEKSYON (2014) Metro Manila East Drama | 36min In Metro Manila East’s “Repleksyon,” a young man makes a positive impression not only on his young brother, but also on those around him. We follow Caloy (Igni Cris Dela Cruz), a reckless, irresponsible youth who resents his absent father—upset that he barely comes home to visit from his work abroad. Caloy lives with his perpetually angry and distressed mother (Lisette Wage) and his observant younger brother, Adrian (Adrian Dela Cruz). Tragedy suddenly strikes the family, and Caloy quickly realizes he misjudged his father. This revelation becomes life-changing for Caloy, and soon he begins to change his ways, even joins the Iglesia Ni Cristo, and soon becomes an inspiring symbol of success and righteousness, especially to Adrian. MME’s “Repleksyon,” directed by Dennis Bustamante, explores the relationship between siblings; how the elder sibling is always looked upon by the younger one—a reflection of values and actions, and how a positive, stable and moral life inspires people. The movie also analyzes the importance of a complete family, and that children naturally require the presence of a father figure; this is revealed by Caloy’s initial hatred for his hard-working father just because he’s absent—yet he tolerates his ever-present mother who explodes with rage whenever she sees Caloy. Perhaps Caloy, with his respectful and loving kindness to his severe and harsh mother, finds her physical presence in his life a sign of true parenting, as compared to a father he barely knows. With only 36 minutes of running time, the film is coherent, with a touch of comedy, and some interesting camerawork, and boasts of a solid, contemporary soundtrack. Igni Cris Dela Cruz delivers a natural, unself-conscious performance, fitting for his role as our protagonist. “Repleksyon” is packed with Christian values, such as respect for parents—even if parents are not always fair—and the importance of being a positive role model. And most importantly, the film conveys that if one is determined to change his ways and aspires a life with direction, he seeks the true words of God in the one true religion, trusting that His wisdom is the most effective manual to living a successful life.
