RESCUE WELL UPDATE: Weve had some questions about what we do, and how, so I figured Id post an update. - We help connect people with things they need, so they can safely rehome their pets, or keep pets healthy and fed (and hopefully, altered). - Supplies and vetting are provided through our fabulous donors, our partners, or out of pocket. - We do not force people to do anything, ever. Rather, we provide owners with info and resources to make their own decisions. We believe this enables authentic, lasting change, and weve seen proof of this in some of the most unlikely communities in Baltimore. - We believe in giving hand-UPS, not hand-outs. We help owners reach thenext step; we dont support owners who have chronic needs, or who intend to breed dogs/cats. - We are NOT a rescue. We do NOT have a foster network, and we do not believe in warehousing animals or in hoarding them. And we still dont have a Magic Dog Farm. Our small circle of fosters help with emergency fostering, usually for a night or two. - We are 100% volunteer-run. We do not collect salaries of any sort, or receive funds in exchange for the work we do. I personally have a full time job, I travel about half the month, I manage two households in two different states, and I have a family. In the past 3 years, Ive clocked over 80k miles doing transport and other rescue related work. You will never, ever hear me complain about the life Ive chosen - I am blessed beyond measure. - All of our bills are paid. We do not carry balances at vets or boarding facilities. (This is not a slight to those who do, we are just stating where we are.) - We run a Hotline that receives about 600 calls per month. We receive dog-in-danger tips, dog fighting tips, and we get information from folks on both sides of the law. We never turn a blind eye on abuse. Ever. - As much as possible, we help people connect to resources if they themselves are homeless, abused, or otherwise in-need. We receive hotline calls from local Veterans Associations, social workers, domestic violence and homeless prevention centers. To help manage the volume of these critical cases, we enlist the help of our own volunteer Case Managers. - We spend several hours a week in some of Baltimores most high risk neighborhoods. For the most part, the residents are incredible people who just need a hand. - We support rescue groups, and we are most proud of our partnership with BARCS, Marylands largest open admission shelter and rescue. BARCS takes in an unfathomable amount of animals each year: over 12,000! With just a couple hundred spaces available, the math is ugly. But somehow, this amazing group of folks have adoption rates that rival No Kill shelters. Our Program Manager, Janice Tuzcan, leads a group of extremely dedicated volunteers who provide Post-adoption support to every single adopter. We also provide re-home assistance to owners who come to or call the shelter to surrender pets. As part of our partnership, BARCS often provides vetting and other assistance to us. In the last year, they helped us prevent over a thousand litters. If you ever want to know more about why we choose to support BARCS, please ask. Wed love to tell you all about the amazing work they do. As for the other area rescues: we have a short list of ones with which we align, so we help and recommend them whenever we can. We do not compete with other groups for funds or fans. - Sadly, we cannot save every dog or cat. We take an average of 20 Hotline calls per day, we receive about 100 Final Pleas from local shelters, and we receive about 20 emails per day from folks looking to surrender pets, and they often want to surrender them the same day. - You may see posts by us for dogs or cats that are shelter-bound. These are courtesy posts for owners, or they are animals that weve offered temporary foster for as a Last Resort. Its the worst part about not having a Magic Dog Farm. There is simply not enough space for every single animal. - The awesome and new-to-Rescue-Well Kristen Russell runs our Placement Program which primarily screens adopters on behalf of owners for all those Craigs List ads you see, so please dont report those ads! Craigs List is NOT BAD: not screening, is. - We also run Community Wells, like the one in Middle River to provide short-term pet food assistance to residents. (Managed by the very committed Karen Jacobs, and stocked by amazing donors.) - Earlier this year, we officially became part of ReLove Animals, Inc. We have big plans to expand our advocacy and front line programs in 2014. As I like to say: Stay tuned. - Finally: we are a no-nonsense, no-drama group. If you want to gossip, back-stab, or sabotage: this is not the group for you. Ever. If you want to uplift, build alliances, or find common ground: Welcome Home :) >> I think that covers what we do pretty sufficiently. If you have questions or suggestions, please feel free to post!
