RESPECTED PAINTER - BLAIR DRAWSON 3HREE Exhibition - Nov. 14th - Dec.20th, 2014 gallerym.ca/blair-drawsons-portfolio It’s hard to find the right tone to describe what I do as an artist. I’m tempted to be jocular, because my work tends to have an underlying humor, I would say. But I don’t want to discount the underlying seriousness of it as well. Here’s the thing. It’s paradox that predisposes me to further paradox. And I think that that’s true for us all, by the way. We are living in “interesting” times, certainly. So, paradox is the subject matter that I return to, again and again. It’s the arena where I like to play. In my time as an editorial illustrator, I preferred jobs which gave me the option of flexing my paradox muscles, but that choice was not always available. Now that I work mostly as a painter, with painting being the original love of my life, I enjoy the freedom to explore further the mad contradictions we must all live within. For the record, I was born in Winnipeg, raised in Thunder Bay, educated in Toronto, the city where I have spent most of my life. Formative times were also spent in California and New York City. I enjoyed relative freedom as a child.
