RESTORING THE LOST DIGNITY IN NIGERIAN POLICE FORCE:- It is Quite debilitating and annoying that Government Institution established to foster peace and security, be the hope of a common man, downtrodden and victim of class abuse or harassment by the rich has turned to be a tormentor and enemy to Nigerian citizens. Most people prefer to relinquish their valuables and rights when molested or abused, some prefer to swallow their pains, anger and pride when their rights are been trampled upon by the influential ones than going to the police or court to seek for redress. Many are jailed for the crime they know nothing about, many are roasting in police cells today because they dont have money to bail themselves even when announced the ban on bailing people with money. Many cases are left untouched/untreated because the complainant have no resources to push his/her case files. Many debt are not recovered today just because seeking the help of Nigerian Police will eventually result to shearing of that money if recovered from the debtor between them(police) and the owner. Many police personnels today are seen as monsters just because of their negative behaviours and attitudes to either accused or complainant .Many of our ladies are raped today while in police custody. What about the story and testimonies of our commercial motorist, drivers and commuters, they sing/say negative things about the Nigerian Police Force becasue they are mostly victims of police brutality and extortions even when the Federal Government banned all road blocks. in fact, Police Stations all over Nigeria are seen or regarded today by the common and average Nigerian as den of lion and rugs. Nowadays, people no longer regard Nigerian Police as friends of the common man as they presume to be. We read all over the news that Federal government banned all road blocks but I ask if those ones in the South-East are not part of the ones banned? Or are they operating their own government separately?, Plying from Onitsha Main bridge to Owerri, one will count about 20 to 30 police road blocks and each demanding #50 from Motorist, some will even keep drums by the roadside were conductors will drop the money ie following Koggi to Enugu before River Niger Bridge. The slogan used by the common man for Police nowadays is Come today,Come tomorrow that is after they must have collected their bail money thereby neglecting the reasons why those cases was brought forward to them.what about those caught in arm robbery, most of them are freed either because their parents are rich and they (Police) will swap them with innocent citizens or because they were able to pay a certain sum of money . In most crime cases, the innocent suffer the most, spend ontop of it and if truth eventually re-surfaces, they will neither render apologies nor refund the money collected from these innocent victims. some of the police officers sell/trade guns to most of the criminals ,while some run as informant , thats why at the time of arrest they(Criminals)get informations before police arrival. . Hmmmmmmmmmmm, Nigerian youths and citizens yearn for change, they cry for dignity in our Nigerian Police Force. Are we going to remain like this Forever? No wonder they say Police are usually the first target or prey to an aggrieved youths, robbers or terrorist organisation. No wonder people now take the laws into their own hands. Thats why there are high rate of crime in our country. People no longer go to the police. Even when one have useful information for the police they prefer concealing it than giving it out to the police in other not to fall victim of there unlawful arrest. Some of them look dirty and shabbily, majority of them are inapt for the job, some of the senior offers lack investigative skills and intelligence needed for the job, thats why the job looks unattractive for some people who really have penchant for the job. Thats why one will be forced to ask, were are our Philosophy,Psychology,Sociology and Religion Graduates who are actually suppose to be in this field of career?. What are the reasons behind these urgly menace, could it be that they are not well funded? If thet is the case what about their yearly budget? Or could It be that is the same corrupt society in which they are operating that is influencing them? If that is the case what about the Zero tolerance in corruption initiated by these present administration? Or could it be that this rumour by some people that most personnels are retired and convicted criminals who were eventually converted to becoming police is true? Or could it be that most people in the force are not qualified to be there? Then what about the graduates and the qualified ones rooming about the street Looking for job?. I weep for Nigeria, Giant of Africa, filled with Hardworking people, a land endowed with so many natural resources. A land were those that are willing to serve and die for their father land are denied the opportunity because of who do you know syndrome?. But my believe in change remain sacrosanct, I believe in the transformation agenda of the present administration to restore the desired dignity in Police were also the hope of the common man will also be restored. My broader question now is, what could be done to tackle/ salvage this government sensitive institution considering the role it has in the Larger society?
