RETINAL TEAR -- Yesterday afternoon I started seeing lights and sparkles from the corner of my right eye. I Googled these strange symptoms and panicked - retinal tear that can lead to a retinal detachment. The whole night there were lights flashing in my right eye. This morning the flashing lights stopped. But then I started having the sensation that cobwebs and debris were floating around in my eye, towards outer corner. These are known as floaters. I went to the doctor to eliminate a stroke or blood pressure complications. An emergency appointment with an ophthalmologists was made and less than 24 hours after the first symptoms I was having a laser procedure to weld around torn area of the retina to the eye wall. Once the liquid in the eye starts moving or leaking behind the retina, retina detachment occurs which is extremely serious and leads to blindness. Operations to correct a detached retina are highly complex without guarantee of success. -- I asked what caused the retinal tear - just a weakness in the retina I was told. The likelihood of a tear in my left eye is very much higher now. I Googled a bit and the tear could also be age related as I dont seem to suffer from the other conditions cited. -- The point being made is: please dont ignore lights or large floaters or what appears to be a dark cloud or curtain over your eyes. Seek medical attention from an ophthalmologist immediately. I was told if it happens over a weekend or after hours go to a trauma unit at the hospital and they will call the ophthalmologist on call. The laser procedure is done in the office an not in theatre.
