REVIEW: Tie Shell by World Magic Shop and David Penn DESCRIPTION: David Penn has created a gimmick that provides the perfect solution to the colour changing tie plot. The Tie Shell gimmick means that you can easily customize two ties of your own choice. This gives you the freedom to promote the corporate clients brand colors, create surprise or use the final revelation to underpin mentalism style routines. A short moment of misdirection is all that is needed to effect the color change. JUNKIE THOUGHTS: The Tie Shell from David Penn is exactly what the name implies. Its a shell-like gimmick that will allow you to change your tie in an instant with just a moment of misdirection. Literally a couple of seconds and youre wearing a completely different tie. Imagine wearing a subtle, understated tie that matches your suit perfectly, then in an instant it changes to match your clients corporate colors like the magical professional you really are. Subtle yet magical. This is an understated moment that can be used to enforce a concept or enhance a finale. On the accompanying DVD, Mr. Penn does a very thorough job of teaching you how to construct the shell from another tie. Keep in mind, once made, the shell cannot be used as a normal tie, just FYI. The construction will take a fair amount of arts and crafts using only some scissors, a sharp knife and some tape. The DVD covers the simple method to do the change as well as a live performance from David Penn. Again, you will need a moment of misdirection and/or shade plus your hand(s) is dirty at the end of the change. Keep this in mind when choreographing your routine. Theres also a short segment with instructions how to knot a tie. I personally tie the Windsor knot and found it a bit difficult to work with the Tie Shell, so consider that when tying your knot. The DVD is shot in high quality in a studio. David Penn discusses the construction and performance in great detail. My only complaint is the lack of performance until the end. I know we often complain about trailers, but they do showcase the effect. I appreciate jumping right into the explanation, but how about showing me what this is all about before that? Id like to see the magic before I get into it. The gimmick itself is very well made and will likely last a lifetime, certainly through hundreds of performances. In fact your tie will wear out LONG before this does. FINAL THOUGHTS: The Tie Shell is a wonderful method of producing a subtle but powerful magical effect. If you are a corporate magician, this is a no-brainer. If you wear a tie in your show, this is a no-brainer. I already have a ton of ideas of how to use this and cant wait to make one up. In fact I think I may buy another gimmick so I can setup for multiple performances. Highly recommended for ANY entertainer who wears a tie. youtu.be/VUwE0tinpb8
