REVISED IMPORTANT ACTION ALERT! TIME SENSITIVE! We have been informed that our suggested additional amendments to bill A3605/S2442 (i.e., adding more early signs to the list of indicators and adding evidence based to the type of intervention) have been accepted by the prime sponsor (Asm Albano, who wrote the bills) so they will be incorporated into the final draft of this bill that will be presented to the Assembly Appropriations Committee tomorrow for review and hopefully approval. Great Job! The bill will be heard in the Appropriations Committee on Monday, November 18th at 2 pm. Feel free to attend and show your support. The next step is to contact all the Appropriations Committee members and respectfully ask them to vote in favor of A3506/S2442 Required Dyslexia Screening Bill as submitted with the amendments. Particularly important is if you live in one of the districts of one of the Appropriations committee members, please point out that YOU are a constituent of his or her district and that this bill is very important to you and need his or her support of the bill. Below is an example of the formal letter DD-NJ will be sending. Please feel free to use some of the language present but note that it is more powerful to send a personalized message Thank you in advance for helping us with this very important action alert. Please contact those legislators on the Appropriations Committee listed below: [email protected], (NJ district 3) [email protected], (NJ district 18) [email protected], (NJ district 11) [email protected], (NJ district 7) [email protected], (NJ district 23) [email protected], (NJ district 6) [email protected], (NJ district 24) [email protected], (NJ district 22) [email protected] (NJ district 29) Sample email: Dear Chairman Burzichelli and Members of the Assembly Appropriations Committee: I am writing to express my general support for the passage of A3506/S2442 Required Dyslexia Screening bill, as proposed with the additional amendments. While parents across the state are concerned by the decision to extend the period for screening to second grade, we are cautiously optimistic that boards of education and schools will begin to implement this reform in time frames well before 2nd grade. This legislation will take a significant and vital step forward in better identifying the thousands of students who are struggling to meet reading standards if districts do not interpret this extension as an invitation to delay screening until the 2nd grade as a general protocol. Science shows us that remediation is most effective before age 10. The process for proper evaluation and identification can take months so timely screening is key to ensuring timely interventions. Therefore, I respectfully request that you vote yes tomorrow at your Appropriations Committee meeting on this bill. Thank you for your support of students with learning disabilities and their families. Kind regards, (Sign your name ... and list your district# if a committee member IS from your district) CC: Members of the Assembly Appropriations Committee
