REVIVING OLD MAGIC (Repeating old post) Kar man mere sat viohaar....My mothers favourite - along with Sach sabhna hoe daaro, paap kadhe dhoe Mother held Bhai Harjinder Singh ji in very high esteem and once even said , Guru aap enna de kanth vich uttar ke uchaaran karde han . ( The Gurus themselves sit in his throat when he recites Gurbani.. This ( Charan Chalo - link below) was perhaps Bhai Harjinder Singh jis first album, and mother had asked me to bring this specially for her, and, fortunately for me , I was able to do so. I even had he good fortune of using pieces from this divine rendition in a short film I had made , along with Aam insaan, on Sikh Gurbani, focusing also on the Birth of the Khalsa. Those days, I would often take mother out on long drives, and the divine renderings of Bhai Sahibs album would play softly on the deck. Sabh Gobind hai, Charan sharan guru ek painda jaaye chal, Deho Daras ...and Main Haun Param Purakh ko daasa ( Bhai Gopal Singh ji) were among the Shabads I would play for her as I would drive her through the foothills en route Anandpur Sahib , where she could actually see the Tenth Master walking with his devotees, full of love and compassion.) The hills would echo the cosmic verses and it was like being transported to a different era.Mother would feel a certain divine presence around her and the age of Guru Gobind Singh would come alive in full panorama, as we would meander through hills around Anandpur Sahib. In the mornings, mother would ask me if I would be interested in listening to Bhai Surjan Singh ji- recitation of Asa di Var...She would later explain ( not translate but interpret and explain) to me every word of the classic , using amazingly liberal and near-scientific idiom to portray a vision of the Guru which so echoed my own non-fundamentalist and cosmopolitan views. Mother had never been to school. Occasionally, father would also accompany us and be equally lost in the experience, though normally he would affectionately opt out, saying, Tusi maa-putt jaa aao, Kaka. Father was devoutly regular with his recitation of nit nem , but he was far, far away from any rigid view or interpretation of Sikhism. Sometimes he would joke, Kaka, meri ta rab de ghar siddhi sifaarish aa. Punn teri maa ne karne aa te daa ehde naal mera bhi lagg jana svarg jaan da. Mother, who was a quiet person except when she talked to me about Gurbani, would merely smile. Both mother and father preferred silence about the possibility of any heaven or hell after death. Ethe hi changiayee di fikar karia kar,Kaka. Baad vich rab jaane ki hai, ki nahi hai. For me, mother was the voice of the Gurus and the mind of the Universe. Here, in memory of her divine presence which still fills my life and these hills and valleys as a sacred fragrance, is the Shabad. Now, whenever I drive past Ropar and Anandpur Sahib foothills - which is often - this fragrance of my mother and father travels with me, talking to me about how the Tenth Master walked these ranges, bow and arrow , Shamsheer and horse and his followers - all there, in full splendour : As kirpaan, khand-o- kharg, tupak, tabar or teer Seph, sarohi, sehthi, yehi hamaare peer.
