RIP Jack Bruce (71 yrs) who died yesterday. The quiet Scottish rock legend, jazz bass guitarist, singer and songwriter was the inspiration for Sting, and generations of bass players after him. Even I can play the famous riff from Bruces hit song Sunshine of your love. A wonderful musician and cofounder of the first supergroup Cream (Bruce, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker) whose music eased our toil while prepping for O Levels in school days. Sad, sad loss. Music anoraks would want it mentioned that Jack Bruce played a customised Gibson SB3 bass, by all accounts a very quirky instrument which tolerated only the more able player (Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones was the other famous afficionado) and produced a distinctive sound very like an acoustic double bass.
