RIP vocalist Maureen Budway .To Pittsburgh jazz fans, she was the creme de la creme of Pittsburgh vocalists, with soul, tone and pitch. Ms. Budway, 51, of Point Breeze, PA, who until last month also taught voice at Duquesne University, her alma mater, died Monday after a two-decade battle with breast cancer. Her musical interests started early, according to her brother, David Budway of Nyack, N.Y., a renowned pianist. Diagnosed with breast cancer about 20 years ago, “She was out there working and singing, even though she was ailing,” her brother said. Even toward the end, Ms. Budway kept singing. Around Labor Day she recorded an album, “Sweet Candor,” which featured Mr. Budway, Mr. Laws, trumpeter Sean Jones and guitarist Joe Negri and will be released nationally Jan. 27 on the MCG label — ensuring that her musical legacy will endure. “I felt her body couldn’t keep up with her spirit,” her brother said. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Bede Catholic Church, 509 S. Dallas Ave., Point Breeze. Memorial donations may be made to the Musicians in Health Crisis Fund, c/o David Budway, 514 Hastings St., Pittsburgh 15206.
