RIYADH, 7 November — Prince Sultan Relief Committee yesterday dispatched a planeload of foodstuffs, including rice and dates, to Chad, as part of the organization’s annual program of distributing iftar meals among poor Muslims in Africa. Maj. Gen. Faisal ibn Jaafar Bali, chairman of the committee, said a C-130 aircraft left Riyadh yesterday for Chad carrying the supplies. He commended the humanitarian program and said it would help foster Islamic brotherhood. Last year as many as 850,000 Muslims in the African countries of Chad, Ethiopia, Niger, Mali and Malawi benefited by the program, organized by the committee with the support of Prince Sultan, second deputy premier and minister of defense and aviation. Meanwhile, the World Assembly of Muslim Youth said it has allocated more than SR1 million for its iftar project in 43 countries. Dr. Abdul Wahab Noorwali, assistant secretary of WAMY, said the organization would carry out the humanitarian program in 22 countries in Africa, 17 in Asia and four in Europe with the help of its overseas offices. The program will include educational and cultural activities, such as lectures and Qur’an recitation, before and after iftar. In a related development, the Charitable Warehouse in Makkah has devised a plan to distribute iftar meals among the poor as well as the visitors of the Grand Mosque. Saleh ibn Abdullah Al-Assaf, director of the foundation, said his organization would distribute one million iftar meals among the faithful who come to the mosque during Ramadan to perform Umrah and offer special prayers. The meals will include chilled water, yogurt, dates, fruit juice, bread and cake, he said, adding that the project is expected to cost SR5 million. A company has been given the contract to supply the meals. "The organization has set out a plan to distribute the meals in a civilized and orderly manner, to help the guests of God to receive them without any difficulty," Al- Assaf said. He said a philanthropist has donated 10,000 meals to the foundation for distribution in the Holy Mosque. "We will also distribute one million bottles of Zamzam water among the worshipers at the mosque at the time of breaking fast," he said. | | A A
