ROADS & COMMUNICATIONS PART 6 As far back as 1876 the inhabitants of Woodland were thinking of railroads but they were not ready to spend and money on projects proposed. They voted down an article to raise funds for the Aroostook River Railroad and again in 1887 they voted down a proposal to raise $2000.00 for the aid of the Northern Maine Railroad. In 1895 the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad was completed as far as Caribou. It was not long before the tracks were extended north to New Sweden, cutting across the northeast corner of Woodland. At a town meeting in 1895 the voters of Woodland decided to give the County of Aroostook authority to purchase additional stock of the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad Company. Many small towns voted to assume financial obligation through County money and the B & A proved to be so successful that it took off the hands of the people of Aroostook the entire burden of indebtedness within a very short time. Soon lumber and potatoes were rolling out of Woodland to many markets and passenger service was started.
