ROCHAS OKOROCHA AND HIS VUVUZELA ADMINISTRATION IN IMO STATE: The lepata mambu- commonly known as vuvuzela is a noise making plastic horn which football fans now use to cheer on the their team. It is South Africas contribution to the world of sports, and in many ways it is an appropriate metaphor for the self-involved crass called governance in Imo state today under Gov. Okorocha. One of the effects of the vuvuzela is dat aside from making loud noise, it can also cause a loss of hearing. OROs use of the political vuvuzela- wat the Igbo would call ndi otimkpu- paid, professional noise makers- has probably caused him both loss of hearing and insight. Imo state is plodding along listlessly under misgovernance. ORO was a flesh-in-the-pan with his empty and gratuitous populism which had little substance. He came on the guise of a philanthropist, and I know that enlightened society should value equality over charity. We dont need the charity of philanthropy in Imo state, wat is clearly needed is the page dat would use the power of the state to stance poverty, diseases, unemployment, and provide equal access to efficient healthcare, well-designed public transportation, well-built and provisional cities, quality education and security. ORO had no ideas and rode on a profound level of disenchatment wit the Ohakim administration, using APGA platform to arrive to power. It is clear now that Imo electorates have seen evidence of his inabilities to govern and provide 21st century leadership to the state. It is shocking to me that such a state with its wide array of intellectual and professional talents, would continue to allow a political bantam weight to preside over its affair, and stymie its potential, and much less, try to bambozzle the people wit wat are largely paper weight claims to public service. The contract scam involving a Lebanese contractor now hunts ORO wit the EFCC clearing his former Deputy, Jude Agbaso of the malfeasance. EFCC basically throws back the question to ORO about the contract, and it is now imperative that the Imo state House of Assembly revisit the erstwhile action. The Imo state house of assembly which has thus far failed the people of the state in this dispensation by its frequent complicity with the executive arm did act with an unusual decisiveness recently wen its members refused to listen or debate the budget presentation by ORO. Dr. Viola Onwuliri, the minister for foreign affairs basically accuse ORO of misappropriation of Imo states share of federal appropriation, particularly the federal grants to the LGA, which the state govt manages under a joint account, the Disaster Relief Fund, and the SURE-P allocations. wat we have on ground in the LGAs of th state is not commensurate wit the huge amount of funds so far collected from the federation account for nearly three years. Mrs Onwuliri said quite pointedly. Even the likes of outspoken catholic bishop Obinna who had been an early supporter of Okorocha began quite early to distance himself frm the administration wen it emerged not long after the election that Okorocha had very little sustainable ideas about taking Imo to the next level. Okorocha acts more like a proconsul rather than a servant of the people. It is clear that ORO administration was fundamentally out of touch wit the aspiration of the Imo people. True, there were some cosmetic touch-ups on the city of Owerri but they were of poor quality of work. The street light on whethral road for instance were cheap garden variety lights that had been put there without the level of professional intricacy dat attends such public investments. The most telling of OROs heresies is the destruction and removal of the Owerri city library, and its replacement with some other structure. This is ofcourse the height of OROs phillistinsm, his lack of intellectual pedigree, and his inability to understand the significance of city libraries as both cultural makers and abodes of city memory. Generation of the users of dat library built under the Eastern Nigeria library system where the beneficiaries of an enlightened age now darkened by the likes of ORO. His free education is mirage and his skul building construction are all cheap paperweight projects. Dear Imolites it is high time we come out enmasse and vote ORO out come 2015. Enough is enough.
