ROCKAWAY SPEED CAMERA UPDATE......Update on Speed Camera at Beach Channel Drive and Beach 106th St. by the sewer plant. This week the Department of Transportation has replaced their part-time, Radar/Camera Car with a permanently mounted camera on a pole in the center medium. This camera appears to be ticketing eastbound traffic only. There is a WARNING! SPEED CAMERA AHEAD sign mounted at the corner of BCD at B108th St., but I am not sure how long it will last. My understanding is that DOT has issued about 5,000 tickets, extracting over $250,000 in hard earned money from Rockaway resident’s pockets. DOT has claimed that it’s about safety and lowering speeds but it’s clear that the fines would be a lot less if drivers are given the courtesy of a warning.
